Exploring the Medieval Charms of Durbuy, Belgium

Nestled in the heart of the Ardennes region of Belgium, the enchanting town of Durbuy is popular with Belgian and international tourists. Known as the “smallest town in the world,” Durbuy transports visitors back in time with its cobblestone streets, ancient architecture, and rich history.

Discover the Old Town

Step into a fairy tale as you wander through the small streets of Durbuy’s Old Town. Durbuy is small but charming. The ideal city to visit in a day. You can marvel at the well-preserved medieval buildings, adorned with vibrant flowers and charming storefronts.

The Grand Place, with its picturesque square and centuries-old buildings, serves as the heart of the town. I suggest you wander around in the narrow alleyways and you will stumble upon hidden courtyards. A highlight is to visit the historic Saint-Nicolas Church as well as the imposing Castle of Durbuy. You will feel like a medieval princess or knight. (You cannot visit the Castle of Durbuy but it is still nice to see from afar.)

Visit Topiary Park

Just a short stroll from the town center lies Topiary Park, a beautiful garden. Prepare to be amazed as you encounter an array of shaped trees and shrubs, crafted into imaginative forms. Take a walk through the park, and discover these interesting trees. The Topiary Park is a testament to the artistry and creativity that can be found in every corner of Durbuy. You can book tickets online.

Climb the Anticline Rock

Standing tall in the heart of the city is the anticline rock. Its layers are contorted in the form of an anticline and tell a geological tale that dates back an astounding 350 million years. Carved over time by the relentless erosive forces of the Ourthe river that streams through the city, you cannot miss this U-shaped rock.

A convenient parking lot nearby provides easy access to a trail that brings you uphill. The reward for those brave enough to venture forth is a breathtaking view that stretches across the city’s landscape. So, seize the opportunity to explore this magnificent natural wonder, but always put safety first!

Refresh Yourself in the Ourthe

Escape the town and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Ourthe. Grab a kayak or a canoe and paddle along the gentle currents, surrounded by lush greenery and rocky cliffs. The past years the kayaking season has become shorter and shorter, make sure you are there around May to be able to get some kayaking fun.

The river offers a tranquil setting for outdoor enthusiasts, with opportunities for fishing, swimming, and picnicking along its banks. As you glide through the water, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the picturesque countryside and the imposing Castle of La Roche-en-Ardenne perched high above.

How to Get to Durbuy

Traveling to Durbuy from Brussels or Antwerp is tricky, especially if you want to do so by public transport. That’s why I recommend to go by car. This will also allow you to do some nice hikes in the neighbourhood or drive to a place where you can rent kayaks.

Durbuy, with its medieval charms and timeless allure, is a destination that catapults you back to the Middle Ages. From the enchanting streets of the Old Town to the beauty of the Topiary Park and the serene landscapes along the Ourthe River, Durbuy offers a captivating experience.

Enjoy this perfect Belgian day trip!
