Belgium, a small country nestled in the heart of Europe, is home to an array of natural and architectural wonders. It is also my home country. I present you with 10 of the most beautiful cities, according to the internet, Pinterest, friends, and myself.
1. Bruges
Known as the “Venice of the North,” Bruges enchants visitors with its cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and serene canals. To be honest, Bruges is not my favourite. It is too touristy and its little sister Ghent has more to offer according to me. However, Bruges is still one of the most visited places in Belgium. If you have a couple of days in the country, you cannot miss it.
What to do in Bruges? Take a boat ride through the winding waterways, admire the towering Belfry of Bruges, and lose yourself in the fairytale atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. Ghent
Ghent, a vibrant city with a rich history, seamlessly blends medieval charm with contemporary culture. This is one of my favourite personals. Ghent is a student city but also way more than that! It offers cosy coffee shops, beautiful architecture and small shops.
Explore the picturesque Graslei and Korenlei waterfront, marvel at the imposing Saint Bavo’s Cathedral, and immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of the Patershol district. Visit the The Gravensteen, an old castle, which in my opinion is more magical outside than inside. Definitely also try the local sweets: Neuzen.
3. Brussels
The bustling capital of Belgium, Brussels, offers a fusion of historic landmarks and modern marvels. Admire the intricate details of the Grand Place, explore the whimsical Atomium, and indulge in delicious Belgian chocolates and waffles in this cosmopolitan city.

4. Dinant
Nestled along the banks of the Meuse River in the Walloon Region, Dinant is a picturesque town that often gets overlooked by tourists in favor of larger cities. However, Dinant has a unique charm of its own, with its stunning cliffs, colorful houses, and the imposing Collegiate Church of Notre Dame.
One of the most iconic landmarks in Dinant is the Citadel, perched high on a cliff overlooking the town and the river. You can take a cable car or climb the 408-step staircase to reach the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of the Meuse Valley. Exploring Dinant and the surrounding area allows you to soak in the serene beauty of the river and the picturesque landscapes.
5. Antwerp
Antwerp, known for its thriving fashion and diamond industries, exudes a vibrant energy. Visit the iconic Antwerp Central Station, explore the medieval streets of the Grote Markt, and discover the artistic masterpieces at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts.

6. Leuven
Home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, Leuven is a charming city with a rich cultural heritage. Leuven is the city were also I studied and lived for 6 years. Marvel at the Gothic masterpiece of St. Peter’s Church, wander through the historic Groot Begijnhof, and sample the world-famous Belgian beers in the city’s traditional pubs on the Oude Markt.
My personal favourite is the big library on the Ladeuzeplein. You can visit the old library as well as the tower, which I highly recommend. The Ladeuzeplein is the ideal square for people-watching or to eat an ice cream and look at the gigantic beetle in the middle of the square.
7. Mechelen
Situated between Brussels and Antwerp, Mechelen is a delightful and often overlooked city that boasts a rich history and stunning architecture. The city’s centerpiece is the magnificent St. Rumbold’s Cathedral, with its impressive tower providing panoramic views of the city and beyond.
Mechelen is also known for its well-preserved Grote Markt (Grand Market Square), surrounded by beautiful guildhalls and the iconic Stadhuis (City Hall). One of the unique attractions in Mechelen is the Anker Brewery, where visitors can learn about the brewing process and taste some fantastic local beers. The peaceful ambiance of Mechelen makes it an ideal destination for a relaxing and cultural escape.
8. Hallerbos
Located in the Flemish Brabant province, the Hallerbos, also known as the Blue Forest, is a breathtaking natural wonder that comes to life during spring. In April, the forest floor is covered with a mesmerizing carpet of bluebells, creating a surreal and enchanting atmosphere. The vibrant colors and the scent of the flowers make it a magical place to explore, especially on a sunny day when the sunlight filters through the leaves. It’s a unique and unexpected sight that should not be missed by nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
This is a must-visit when in Belgium in Spring.
9. Namur
The Citadel of Namur, perched atop a hill overlooking the city and the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, is a historical fortress with origins dating back to Roman times. The citadel has played a crucial role in Belgian history, witnessing numerous battles and sieges. Today, visitors can explore its extensive network of underground passages, military structures, and enjoy panoramic views from the top.
One of the best places to admire the scenic beauty is from the Esplanade, a large open area in front of the citadel. The breathtaking view of the city and the rivers winding through the landscape makes the ascent to the citadel even more rewarding.
10. The Ardennes
The Ardennes is not just a city, it is an entire region in the South of Belgium. It’s famous among Belgians for its beautiful nature and it’s a place to escape the cities and find rest. The Ardennes are an oasis of rolling hills, dense forests, and picturesque villages. Hike through the breathtaking landscapes, visit the majestic Caves of Han, and embrace the tranquility of its beautiful nature.
