I’ve always been a princess and who does not love a beautiful medieval castle. When I saw pictures of Bourscheid Castle in Luxembourg while planning my family’s trip to Nutchel Cabins, I knew I had to add it to my travel list. The castle is perched on a cliff overlooking the valley below, and the views are absolutely stunning.

A Medieval Castle Surrounded by Stunning Nature

We decided to do a day trip to Bourscheid, and I’m so glad we did. The castle is even more impressive in person than it is in photos. The ruins are extensive, and you can easily spend a few hours exploring them. The views from the castle are as beautiful as the old building itself.

Bourscheid Castle is one of the largest in Luxembourg, and it's easy to see why.

Bourscheid Castle is one of the largest in Luxembourg, and it’s easy to see why. The castle was enlarged in four stages, and the last one ended in 1430 with the construction of the large enclosure and its many towers. The lords of Bourscheid who lived in the castle at the time were among the most respected chivalric families in the region. They were loyal vassals of the Duke of Luxembourg and served as his counselors and fought alongside him in armed conflicts. The House of Bourscheid was replaced by the House of Metternich in 1626, before the French Revolution brought an end to feudal power.

In the 19th century, the castle was abandoned and eventually fell into ruins. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination.

Hiking in Luxembourg

There are also a few hiking trails that start from the castle, so you can combine your visit with a bit of exercise. We did the “Bourscheid Nordschleife” which is a moderate hike with some amazing views. The trail is 10,3 km and very hilly. It took us 4 hours to walk the entire trail including some breaks and stopping for lunch on one of the hills. What is better than an old school sandwich picknick with a view?

After our hike we had a drink and an ice cream at the castle and enjoyed the wonderful views. It was the perfect reward after the hike.
