Bocas del Toro is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and laid-back island vibe. Yet, beyond the surf and sand lies a paradise of lush rainforests, mysterious mangroves, and hidden trails that are ideal for adventurous souls like me. Hiking in Bocas del Toro offers you to discover a bit more of the island in a fun way. Let’s get ready to be sweaty and go for a walk!
The Call of the Wild: Bocas del Toro’s Natural Landscape
Bocas del Toro isn’t just a beachgoer’s dream; it’s a mosaic of diverse ecosystems. From dense jungle canopies to serene mangrove forests, each island has fun hiking trails, short or long. Hiking here means not just a physical journey, you also can see many animals such as howler monkeys, sloths and birds.
Hiking Trails in Bocas del Toro
Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park
One of my favourite places of Bocas del Toro is Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park. It makes up a big portion of Bastimentos Island along with several smaller islands and their surrounding waters. Here, the Old Bank to Wizard Beach trail offers an short but fun trek through the jungle, finishing at the secluded Wizard Beach. The trail is usually easy. Some people even take their surf board. But it can be challenging too after the rain, with muddy paths and steep inclines. The reward is a stunning, often deserted beach with waves crashing against the shore—a perfect spot for rest and a nice swim after as a break from the walk.
The Bat Cave Trek
For the more adventurous, the hike to the Bat Cave on Bastimentos Island promises an unforgettable experience. Guided tours lead you through dense jungle to a hidden cave, home to thousands of bats. Wading through the cave’s waters, you’ll witness these flying creatures up close, along with rock formations and a chance to plunge into a secret freshwater pool. It’s an adventure that combines hiking with spelunking.
Finca Los Monos Botanical Garden
While not a hike in the traditional sense, a visit to Finca Los Monos Botanical Garden on Isla Colon offers a leisurely walk through beautifully landscaped gardens filled with tropical plants, flowers, and trees. The tranquility and the variety of flora make it a nice escape of the vibrant Bocas Town.
Playa Bluff to La Piscina Beach and the Blue Lagoon
Cycle form Bocas Town to Playa Bluff. Once at this beach, that’s a favourite among the locals you can cycle or hike towards La Piscina Beach and the Blue Lagoon. We only saw 4 other people on this 2h walk. The beaches are amazing and you are often alone. Look for the howler monkeys up in the trees, you will definitely hear them.
Hiking Tips for Bocas del Toro
- Prepare for the Weather: The climate in Bocas del Toro can be unpredictable, with sudden rain showers. Bring your bikini or swimming trunks for a swimming break in the ocean.
- Stay Hydrated: The humidity and heat can be intense, especially on longer hikes. Carry plenty of water and snacks to keep energy levels up.
- Respect the Environment: The ecosystems in Bocas del Toro are fragile. Stick to marked trails, avoid disturbing wildlife, and carry out all trash.
- Leave on time: None of the paths and beaches are lit. So make sure you make your way back to the villages or your ho(s)tel on time.
- Check Tides for Beach Hikes: If your hike ends at a beach or involves crossing water, be aware of the tide times to avoid getting cut off.
The Unseen Bocas del Toro: Beyond the Beach
Hiking in Bocas del Toro reveals a side that many visitors never see. It’s a world where howler monkeys call from the treetops, where exotic birds like the toucan add splashes of colour, and where you come across emtpy beaches. It’s a reminder that the true essence of travel lies in stepping off the beaten path and embracing the unknown.
