Nestled on the Caribbean coast of Panama, Bocas del Toro is an archipelago that offers more than just picturesque beaches and crystal-clear waters. And, I was as lucky to discover this myself. Yes, I did completely fall in love with this paradise. Bocas del Toro a vibrant blend of cultures, lush tropical landscapes, and endless adventure. Let’s dive into the fun things you can do in this paradise.
1. Surf the Waves
Bocas del Toro is renowned for its surfing spots, with breaks suitable for all levels, from beginners to seasoned surfers. The main island, Isla Colon, hosts some of the best spots, including Playa Paunch (beginner, mid-level) and Playa Bluff (experienced surfers). For those who are new to the sport, several surf schools offer lessons. The warm waters and consistent waves make surfing here an unforgettable experience.
2. Explore the Underwater World
Snorkeling and scuba diving in Bocas del Toro are must-do activities, thanks to the abundant marine life and beautiful coral reefs. The clear Caribbean waters provide excellent visibility, allowing you to explore the vibrant underwater ecosystems. Popular spots include Coral Cay, where you can swim alongside colourful fish, and the starfish-studded Starfish Beach. Dive shops in Bocas Town offer tours and equipment rental, making it easy for everyone to take the plunge.
3. Relax at Wizard Beach
One of my favourite activities in Bocas del Toro is discovering new beaches. Take a 15-minute boat drive from Bocas Town to Isla Bastimentos, this will cost you the equivalent of $5. Once you get to the island, get up the stairs and follow the path to the left. After a 10 min walk you will find a sign that indicates the path to Wizard Beach. It’s a 30 min walk to this beautiful beach. That walk is totally worth it! Don’t forget to bring some drinks and snacks, there is no bars or stores at the beach.
4. Island-Hopping
One of the most fun things to do in Bocas del Toro is island-hopping. Each island in the archipelago has its unique charm, from the untouched beauty of Wizard Beach on Isla Bastimentos to the lively bars and clubs of Isla Carenero A short boat ride can take you to a completely different world paradise.
- Isla Bastimentos: Known for its stunning beaches like Wizard Beach and Red Frog Beach, Isla Bastimentos is also home to part of the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts.
- Isla Carenero: Just a minute away by boat from Bocas Town, Carenero offers great surfing spots, chill beach bars, and a more laid-back vibe compared to Isla Colon. You can walk around the entire island in two hours. It’s a fun hike!
- Isla Solarte: Offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, with vibrant coral reefs and rich marine life.
Each boat ride offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. You can take private boats or public boats. These range from $1 to $10.
5. Experience the Nightlife
When the sun sets, Bocas Town on Isla Colon comes alive with a vibrant nightlife scene. The town boasts a range of bars and clubs where you can enjoy live music, dance to reggae beats, or simply sip a cocktail by the water. The friendly and laid-back atmosphere makes it easy to meet fellow travellers and locals. Some of the locals favourite hangouts are the Floating Bar (yes, this is on the water), La Iguana and Aqua Lounge (on Carenero Island which is a 1 min boat ride away).
6. Kayak Through Mangroves
For a closer look at the islands diverse ecosystems, rent a kayak and paddle through the calm waters surrounded by mangrove forests. This serene experience allows you to observe the unique flora and fauna, including birds, fish, and even sloths. Some guided tours offer the chance to kayak at night, where bioluminescent plankton light up the water around you, creating a magical experience.
7. Cycle Around Isla Colon
Renting a bike and exploring Isla Colon’s flat and scenic roads is a delightful way to spend a day. Cycle to beaches like Playa Bluff, stopping at local restaurants along the way. Biking offers a sense of freedom and a slower pace to appreciate the island’s beauty. The road towards Playa Bluff is a dirt road but ideal for cycling. There are not too many cars. Be aware that you return to Bocas Town in time, the path is completely dark at night.
