Nestled within the enchanting archipelago of Bocas del Toro, a beach is hidden faraway of the busy main town – Playa Bluff. Known for its breathtaking beach, lush surroundings, and an unmistakably unique vibe, Playa Bluff is a favourite among locals.
Discovering Playa Bluff
Situated on the northeastern coast of Isla Colon, Playa Bluff is easily accessible from Bocas Town, the archipelago’s bustling main town. An hour drive or 2-hour bike ride, on a road next to the ocean, brings you to a place where golden sands meet the clear blue waters of the Caribbean, all set against a backdrop of dense tropical forest.
What Makes Playa Bluff Unique
In contrast to the more frequented spots of Bocas del Toro, Playa Bluff remains largely untouched by the hands of mass tourism. Its strong surf makes it a coveted spot for surfers seeking thrilling waves, though the powerful currents advise caution for those wanting to swim. It’s this wild, untamed nature that sets Playa Bluff apart, offering a slice of paradise.
You cannot find many beach bars at Playa Bluff, but there are some. Bombom beach bar is known for its delicious food and relaxing atmosphere. It’s definitely worth visiting. I spend 10 days working from Island Plantation, the hotel just behind Bombom beach. The beach bar was my go-to spot for slow mornings, delicious cocktails and bonfire evenings at the beach.
Activities at Playa Bluff
- Surfing: Playa Bluff is a surfer’s haven. The best times to catch these waves span from late spring through autumn, providing a lengthy season for surf enthusiasts to enjoy.
- Wildlife Watching: The area around Playa Bluff is teeming with wildlife, offering glimpses of sea turtles during nesting season, sloths hanging in the trees, and a lots of bird species. It’s a nature lover’s dream come true. Around the Bombom beach bar you can always find a family of sloths and howler monkeys swinging in the trees.
- Hiking: For those looking to explore on foot, nearby trails offer breathtaking views and intimate encounters with the island’s natural beauty. Take a 2-hour walk through Sloth Forest to the Blue Laguna and Piscina beach. It’s worth it.
Staying Near Playa Bluff
From eco-friendly lodges nestled in the heart of the jungle to cozy beachfront hostels, Playa Bluff and its surroundings offer a variety of accommodations to suit every preference and budget. I stayed at Island Plantation, which I highly recommend. It’s an oasis in the jungle including a yoga deck, swimming pool and reading nook. They offer rooms and studios.
