The Algarve is beautiful. Its nature is stunning. Its villages are cosy. Where to go and what to see? I list my favourite day trips in Portugal’s Southern regio so you know where to go and what you cannot miss.
1. Olhão, a windy fishermen’s village
It is likely you will land in Faro, if you are visiting the Algarve by plane. Faro did nothing but disappoint. Nonetheless, its smaller neighbour Olhão made up for that. So I would say skip Faro and drive straight to this fishermen village. You will not find fish anywhere fresher than on the fish market in this Portuguese gem. This city is what it is today thanks to its fishing industry and canning factories. But Olhão has to offer more. It streets are colourful and peaceful. You just cannot not smile when walking here.
2. The Benagil Cave, one of nature’s wonders
A must-see in the Algarve is the Benagil Cave, a beautiful wonder of nature. You can only reach the cave by sea, that means by kayak or boat. It is worth the effort if you go as early as possible in the morning. You won’t be alone. A tip is to hike to the cave from Cavoeira. It is a beautiful long walk and not too difficult.
3. Silves, the ancient capital of the Algarve
Silves is beauty in itself. Even tough most of the Algarve’s gems lay next to the beach, Silves does not. Nonetheless, worth a visit. This small city used to be the capital of the Algarve. When walking around in its little streets and visiting its fort, I understand why. Walk around in this city and enjoy the unexpected beauty of Moorish and Christian elements coming together. Yes, Silves exceeded my expectations.
4. Sagres, the End of the World
Be ready for it to get windy in Sagres. This city is the most Western point of mainland Portugal and like no other place in the Algarve. It is known as the end of the world and the ‘gardens’ of its fort do look like that; no trees, high cliffs and open sea. Oh, and lots and lots of wind.
5. Aljezur, surf’s up
The big Atlantic Ocean and its waves are majestic and perfect to learn how to surf. One thing I wanted to do being in the Algarve was to get on a surf board again. To be honest, feeling one with nature and the ocean for half a day was the best part of the trip. While being on a board I forget everything. It is just me, the waves and the surf board. Aljezur offers multiple places to surf, not all beaches are as accessible and some may even be a bit challenging when it comes to surfing. Praia da Arrifana is the perfect spot for beginners. Here as well, go early. The waves may get crowded. I promise you, you won’t regret surfing in this amazing location.
