Lost City Trek: Your Ultimate Packing Guide

Embarking on the Lost City Trek in Colombia is an unforgettable adventure that takes you through lush jungles, across rivers, and up steep mountain paths to the ancient ruins of Ciudad Perdida. This challenging multi-day trek requires careful preparation to ensure you have everything you need for a safe and enjoyable journey. Here’s your ultimate packing guide for the Lost City Trek.

1. Essential Documents and Money

Passports and Permits

  • Passport: Carry a photocopy and keep your original passport in a secure, waterproof bag.
  • Permits: Ensure you have the necessary permits for the trek, usually arranged by your tour operator.

Money

  • Cash: Bring enough cash in Colombian pesos for tips, snacks, and any unexpected expenses. There are no ATMs along the trek. It is advised to take 500K Colombian pesos.

2. Clothing and Footwear

Clothing

  • Lightweight, Quick-Dry Clothing: The trek involves a hot and humid climate, so pack moisture-wicking and quick-dry clothes.
    • 3 T-Shirts and 1 Long-Sleeve Shirt: To protect against sun and insects.
    • 2 Hiking Shorts and 1 Pants: Comfortable and quick-drying.
  • Rain Jacket or Poncho: Essential for sudden tropical downpours.
  • Swimwear: For swimming in natural pools and rivers.
  • Hat and Sunglasses: To protect against the strong sun.

Footwear

  • 1 Pair of Hiking Boots or Shoes: Sturdy, waterproof, and broken-in.
  • 1 Pair of Water Shoes or Sandals: For river crossings and to wear at campsites.
  • 4 Pairs of Hiking Socks: Moisture-wicking and quick-drying. Bring extra pairs.

3. Gear and Equipment

Backpack

  • 40-50 Liter Backpack: With good support and waterproof cover. If you don’t have a waterproof cover I highly recommend to take a big garbage bag.

Sleeping Gear

  • Lightweight Liner: Depending on the season, a liner may suffice.
  • Pillow Case: Optional, but adds comfort.

Optional: Trekking Poles

  • Trekking Poles: Help with stability and reducing strain on knees but are optional.

Hydration and Nutrition

  • Water Bottles or Hydration Bladder: At least 2 liters capacity.
  • Water Purification Tablets or Filter: Although guides usually provide purified water, it’s good to be prepared.
  • Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, dried fruits for extra energy between meals. I was happy I had some extra snacks for down moments, even though you get provided with enough food and snacks along the way.

Navigation and Communication

  • Mobile Phone and Charger: For emergencies. A portable power bank is also recommended.

4. Health and Hygiene

First Aid Kit

  • Personal First Aid Kit: Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, blister treatment, painkillers, and any personal medications.

Insect Protection

  • Insect Repellent: With DEET or other effective ingredients. This is a MUST!

Sun Protection

  • Sunscreen: High SPF, waterproof.
  • Lip Balm with SPF: To protect your lips from sunburn.

Toiletries

  • Biodegradable Soap and Shampoo: To minimize environmental impact.
  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste
  • Toilet Paper and Ziplock Bags: Not all camps provide toilet paper, so make sure to bring your own.
  • Quick-Dry Towel: Compact and dries quickly, perfect for swimming spots.

5. Optional but Recommended Items

Camera

  • Camera or Smartphone: To capture the stunning scenery and memorable moments. Ensure it’s in a waterproof case or bag.

Binoculars

  • Binoculars: Great for wildlife spotting.

Journal and Pen

  • Journal and Pen: To document your adventure and observations.

Hi, what did you sleep in? And what month did you go? We’re planning to do it in June.

Hi Felicity! Great, you should! I did it in February. We slept in bunk beds. I was so tired every evening that I slept very well. All the bunk beds have mosquito nets, blankets and pillows. I would advise to take a pillow case, just for your own comfort. 😉 Enjoy!!!
