Best beaches in Madeira

Madeira, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” is a stunning archipelago that boasts not only lush landscapes for hikes and vibrant culture but also some of the most beautiful beaches you can find in Europe. Madeira has beaches that will captivate you. Here’s a guide to the best beaches in Madeira that you simply must visit.

1. Praia Formosa

The Popular Urban Beach

Located in the capital city, Funchal, Praia Formosa is the largest public beach on the island. This beach is a combination of pebbles and black sand, offering a unique setting against the backdrop of the blue Atlantic. Praia Formosa is divided into several smaller beaches, such as Praia Nova, Praia Formosa, and Praia dos Namorados.

I recommend to walk all the way to the part of the beach just in front of Ilhéu da Praia Formosa. Here you’ll find some beach bars with the most delicious and cheap seafood.

Activities and Amenities

Praia Formosa is perfect for a variety of activities. You can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, or taking a leisurely stroll along the promenade that connects to the famous Lido area. Find your way to the Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools, it is not super pretty but a popular pool and ideal to catch some sun.

2. Fajã dos Padres

A Secluded Paradise

Fajã dos Padres is a hidden gem located on the southern coast of Madeira. Accessible only by cable car or boat, this beach offers a secluded retreat surrounded by dramatic cliffs and lush vineyards. The journey to Fajã dos Padres is an adventure in itself, with stunning views along the way. This is my favourite beach in Madeira!

Serenity and Unique Experiences

The beach at Fajã dos Padres is small but charming, with crystal-clear waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. The isolation of the beach means it’s often quiet and uncrowded, ideal for those seeking tranquility. The area is also known for its organic farm, where you can taste fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Enjoy a meal at the beachside restaurant, which serves delicious dishes made from the farm’s produce.

3. Seixal Beach

Black Sand Beauty

Seixal Beach, located on the northern coast of Madeira, is known for its striking black volcanic sand and dramatic cliffs. It may be the post famous beach of the island.

Untouched and Scenic

The natural pools formed by volcanic rocks at Seixal Beach are perfect for a refreshing dip. The surrounding lush green mountains add to the scenic beauty, making it a great spot for photography and nature walks. There are fewer facilities here, so it’s advisable to bring your own supplies if you plan to spend the day.

5. Prainha de Caniçal

A Small Slice of Paradise

Prainha de Caniçal, situated in the eastern part of Madeira near the town of Caniçal, is a charming small beach known for its fine black sand and clear waters. This beach offers a more intimate and less crowded experience.

Tranquil and Relaxing

Prainha de Caniçal is ideal for those seeking peace and tranquility. The water is calm and perfect for swimming, and the beach is surrounded by cliffs and native vegetation, providing a beautiful natural setting. There are basic amenities available, including a small café where you can grab a drink or a snack.

Beach Time!

Madeira’s beaches offer a diverse range of experiences, from the golden sands of Porto Santo to the unique black sand beaches like Seixal and Prainha de Caniçal. Pack your sunscreen and beach gear, and get ready to explore the stunning beaches of this Atlantic paradise!

Let’s go.

Praia Formosa is probably the funnest in my opinion. I like walking the waterfront and check out the local eateries around there.
