While everyone is flocking to the coast in the summer, those of us “in the know” wait for the first golden leaf to fall to head to Zagreb.
The Croatian capital transforms in autumn. The air gets crisp, the scent of roasted chestnuts fills the streets, and the city’s Austro-Hungarian architecture looks positively regal against a backdrop of orange and gold.
If you’re heading to the “City of a Million Hearts” this autumn, here are 7 things you absolutely cannot miss:
1. Warm Your Hands with Street-Roasted Chestnuts
As soon as October hits, you’ll see smoke rising from small green stands on nearly every street corner. Follow your nose to the kesteni (chestnuts) vendors. For a few euros, you’ll get a paper cone of warm, smoky goodness. It’s the unofficial “taste” of fall in Zagreb.
2. Walk the “Green Horseshoe” in Full Color
Zagreb’s Lower Town is designed in a U-shape of interconnected parks known as Lenuci’s Horseshoe. Start at Zrinjevac Park and walk through to the Botanical Garden. In the autumn, the giant plane trees turn a brilliant gold, making it the most photogenic stroll in the city.
3. Take the “Shortest Ride in the World” to the Upper Town
Hop on the Zagreb Funicular, it’s the world’s shortest public transport cable car, connecting the Lower and Upper Towns in just 64 seconds. Once at the top, wander the medieval streets of Gradec. The cool autumn air makes the climb to the top of Lotrščak Tower for a panoramic view much more pleasant than in the summer heat!
4. Witness the “Golden Hour” at Mirogoj Cemetery
It might sound unusual to visit a cemetery, but Mirogoj is one of the most beautiful architectural gems in Europe. Its ivy-covered arcades turn fiery red and orange in October. If you’re there on November 1st (All Saints’ Day), the entire place is illuminated by thousands of flickering candles, it’s a hauntingly beautiful sight.
5. Feast on Comfort Food at La Štruk
When the temperature drops, you need štrukli. This traditional cheese-filled pastry is the ultimate Croatian comfort food. Head to the tiny, cozy La Štruk in the Upper Town. They offer seasonal versions, but the classic baked blueberry or pumpkin seed varieties are perfect for a chilly fall afternoon.
6. Hunt for Treasures at Britanski Trg
Every Sunday morning, British Square (Britanski trg) turns into an open-air antique and flea market. It’s the perfect place to spend a slow autumn morning rummaging through vintage postcards, Yugoslav-era memorabilia, and old pocket watches before grabbing a coffee at a nearby café
7. Hike (or Ride) to the Top of Mount Medvednica
Locals love “Sljeme”: the highest peak of the mountain overlooking the city. You can take the new cable car (Žičara) up for stunning views of the autumn canopy, or hike the trails through the forest. Reward yourself at a mountain hut (planinarski dom) with a bowl of grah (hearty bean soup with sausage).
