Ubud Bali

Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali, is a must-visit destination known for its lush rice terraces, serene temples, and wellness retreats. It is known due to the movie Eat, Pray, Love and you won’t be alone in Ubud. Still, it’s a must visit to get what Bali is about.

Here’s how to make the most of three days in Ubud.

Day 1: Culture and Spirituality

Morning: Purification Ritual

Start your Ubud journey with a traditional Balinese purification ritual. You can do so at the most popular temple Tirta Empul Temple, or at Griya Beji Waterfalls. I choose for the second option, simply because it’s less touristy and you get to see the waterfall as well. This sacred water fall, located about 30 minutes from Ubud, is known for its holy springs where locals and visitors partake in a cleansing ceremony. Join in the ritual by following the steps of prayer and immersion in the cool, refreshing waters.

You will get a private guide who explains you all about the culture and rituals. Even though it does feel a bit like a tourist trap, I loved to learn about the Balinese religions and to see how to locals pray. I decided to do the purification ritual on a rainy Friday morning as soon as it opened. Therefore I was the only tourist here among several locals.

Afternoon: Visit the Temples of Ubud

After the purification ritual, explore some of Ubud’s most beautiful temples:

  • Pura Taman Saraswati: A picturesque water temple dedicated to the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati, surrounded by lotus ponds.
  • Ubud Palace: if you are lucky you can see dance classes or other cultural classes here. You can walk in freely.
  • Pura Dalem Ganung: You can find this temple in the Monkey Forest. As I am not a big fan of monkeys I skipped this one, but if you decide to visit the forest, definitely pass by the temple as well.

Evening: Have a nice dinner at a Warung

Taste the best Balinese food at a local restaurant or Warung. You’ll find many of these small local places next to the road. I always recommend to ask in your hotel or Airbnb which is the best warung in your neighbourhood. As locals know best!

Day 2: Adventure and Nature

Early Morning: Sunrise Hike at Mount Batur

Set your alarm early for a thrilling sunrise trek up Mount Batur. The climb takes about two hours, and once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape as the sun rises. Enjoy a warm cup of coffee at the top before descending.

Morning/noon: Visit Besakih Temple

After the trek, go to Besakih Temple which is a 30 min drive. Not many tours offer this combination so I recommend getting a private drive. Compared to the busy rice fields and coffee plantations that are usually included in a tour, this temple is a must see according to me. It is the biggest temple in Indonesia as it is the mother temple. If you visit it in the morning, you may be the only tourist at the temple. Enjoy the views!

Afternoon: Waterfalls

Take your bikini or swimming trunks on this day trip! Stop at the waterfalls.

The most stunning ones are:

  • Tukad Cepung Waterfall
  • Koh Lanta Waterfall
  • Tegenungan Waterfall
  • Secret Waterfall

Pick and choose!

Practicalities for This Day Trip

Tip: The private driver I hired for the day brought me to Mount Batur, where I joined a group for the hike. You cannot hike the mountain by yourself as it is not allowed. Next, he took me to the temple and the waterfalls after which he dropped me in Ubud again. I could stop as often as I wanted and see as many water falls as I liked for the same price. It was only 250K balinese rupee more than the regular tours to Mount Batur. If you are with 2 or more I definitely recommend doing this. I paid 1M balinese rupee for the day trip, including breakfast and the hike on Mount Batur (excl. the entrance of the temple).

Evening: Explore Ubud’s Night Market

If you still have energy after this day trip, or after a nap, head to the Gianyar Night Market. Here you can try authentic Balinese street food. Try delicious dishes like satay, babi guling (suckling pig), and fresh tropical fruits.

Day 3: Wellness and Relaxation

Morning: Take a Yoga Class

No trip to Ubud is complete without a yoga session. Visit a renowned studio like Yoga Barn or Radiantly Alive for a rejuvenating class surrounded by nature. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, the peaceful atmosphere is perfect for deep relaxation.

Afternoon: Spa and Massage

Treat yourself to a traditional Balinese massage at one of Ubud’s best spas, such as Karsa Spa or Taksu Spa. The combination of natural oils, aromatherapy, and expert techniques will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Evening: Sunset at Campuhan Ridge Walk

End your trip with a peaceful walk along the Campuhan Ridge Walk, a scenic trail with sweeping views of Ubud’s lush landscapes. This is the perfect way to soak in the tranquility before leaving Ubud.

Discover Ubud

Three days in Ubud offer a perfect mix of adventure, spirituality, and relaxation. Whether you’re cleansing your soul at a sacred temple, watching the sunrise from a volcano, or finding inner peace in a yoga class, Ubud is a destination that nourishes both the body and mind.

Are you ready to experience it for yourself?

Enjoy!
