Madeira, Portugal

Madeira, an enchanting Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean, offers a diverse range of activities that are ideal for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and culture enthusiasts. From its breathtaking landscapes to its charming towns, Madeira has lots to offer. Here are my 7 must-do activities to ensure you experience the best of what this island has to offer.

Let’s get ready!

1. Hiking Pico do Arieiro

One of the most amazing experiences in Madeira is hiking Pico do Arieiro, the island’s third-highest peak. Standing at 1,818 meters above sea level, Pico do Arieiro offers some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever encounter. Good to know is that it is also the most popular hike on the island. Go early, and then I mean early early at 6 a.m. in order to park on the parking and kick off your walk immediately after sunrise. If you arrive late you may have to park a bit further down the hill.

Highlights:

  • Spectacular Views: On clear days, you can see as far as Porto Santo Island. The sunrise from Pico do Arieiro is particularly mesmerizing, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink.
  • Challenging Trails: The hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak, is a popular and challenging route. It takes you through tunnels and along narrow ridges, offering a thrilling adventure.
  • Unique Flora and Fauna: The trail is surrounded by unique plant species and offers the chance to spot birds.

2. Visiting the Botanical Garden

Located in Funchal, the Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico da Madeira) is a lush, beautifully maintained garden that showcases the island’s rich biodiversity. It is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens I have ever been to.

After hiking Pico do Arieiro we had lunch at this garden, and strolled around. Ideal for a lazy afternoon, after a hike!

Highlights:

  • Exotic Plants: The garden is home to over 2,500 species of plants from all over the world, including tropical and subtropical species.
  • Panoramic Views: Situated on a hillside, the garden offers stunning views of Funchal and the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Bird Park: The garden also includes a small bird park, which is home to a variety of exotic birds.

3. Strolling Around Funchal

Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is a charming city with a mix of historic sites, vibrant markets, and modern attractions. Strolling around Funchal offers a great way to soak in the local culture and atmosphere.

Highlights:

  • Historic Sites: Visit the Sé Cathedral, a beautiful Gothic structure dating back to the 15th century, and the São Tiago Fortress, which now houses the Contemporary Art Museum.
  • Markets: The Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers’ Market) is a lively spot where you can find fresh produce, local delicacies, and handcrafted goods.
  • Street Art: The old town (Zona Velha) is known for its colorful street art, particularly along Rua de Santa Maria, where artists have transformed old doors into vibrant works of art.

4. Visiting a Beach by Cable Car

One of the unique experiences Madeira offers is visiting a beach by cable car. The Fajã dos Padres beach, accessible only by a cable car descending a steep cliff, is a hidden gem.

Be aware, the cable car only opens at 10 a.m. and there is not much parking around. I advise to go a bit before and enjoy the amazing view from the top.

You cannot hike here. It is perfect for a beach day.

Highlights:

  • Scenic Ride: The cable car ride itself is an adventure, offering stunning views of the cliffs and ocean as you descend.
  • Secluded Beach: Fajã dos Padres is a tranquil beach with crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and relaxing.
  • Local Cuisine: There’s a small restaurant on the beach that serves fresh, local dishes, making it a great spot for a leisurely lunch.

5. Exploring the Laurisilva Forest

The Laurisilva Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a subtropical rainforest that covers a significant portion of Madeira. It’s one of the few remaining laurel forests in the world.

Highlights:

  • Unique Ecosystem: The forest is home to many endemic species of plants and animals, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
  • Levada do Caldeirão Verde: This is one of the most popular trails on the island, leading you through lush greenery to a stunning waterfall.
  • Tranquility: The serene and misty atmosphere of the forest provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

6. Discovering the Levada Walks

Madeira is famous for its extensive network of levadas—irrigation channels that run through the island’s lush landscapes. Walking along these levadas offers a unique way to explore Madeira’s natural beauty.

Highlights:

  • Scenic Trails: Levada walks take you through some of the most stunning scenery on the island, including lush forests, dramatic cliffs, and serene valleys.
  • Levada dos 25 Fontes: This trail features multiple waterfalls and beautiful lagoons. It’s a perfect spot for nature photography and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings.
  • Accessible Trails: Many levada walks are accessible for all fitness levels, offering options for both casual walkers and experienced hikers.

7. Exploring the Caves of São Vicente

The São Vicente Caves (Grutas de São Vicente) provide a fascinating glimpse into Madeira’s volcanic origins. These lava tubes, formed over 890,000 years ago, offer an intriguing underground adventure.

Highlights:

  • Lava Tubes: Walk through the impressive network of lava tubes, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.
  • Volcanism Centre: The on-site Volcanism Centre features interactive exhibits and a 3D film that explains the geological history of the caves and the island.
  • Guided Tours: Guides lead tours through the caves, providing interesting insights into their formation and the volcanic activity that shaped Madeira.

Madeira is an island of endless adventure and beauty, offering experiences that cater to all types of travelers. Whether you’re hiking the dramatic peaks of Pico do Arieiro, exploring the lush Laurisilva Forest, or relaxing on a secluded beach reached by cable car, you’ll find that Madeira’s charm and diversity are unparalleled. Yes, it really is the Hawaii of Europe.
