Marrakech, with its vibrant culture, stunning architecture, and bustling markets, is the perfect destination for a memorable girls’ trip. Last week one of my primary school girl friends and I enjoyed the colourful city as our 30th birthday girls getaway. And yes, it was fun. Even though I had been there before, my friend was pleasantly surprised by the colours, architecture and friendly people of the city.
Discover what we enjoyed most during our weekend in Marrakech:
1. Explore the Medina and Souks
Dive into the heart of Marrakech by exploring the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the winding alleyways of the souks, where you’ll find everything from colourful textiles and intricate jewelry to spices and traditional Moroccan crafts. Don’t forget to haggle for the best prices!
2. Visit Jardin Majorelle
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city at Jardin Majorelle. This lush garden, created by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent, is a serene oasis filled with exotic plants, vibrant blue buildings, and tranquil water features. It’s the perfect spot for some peaceful reflection and stunning photos. We loved it. I recommend to visit it on a sunny day!
3. Discover the Yves Saint Laurent Museum
Adjacent to Jardin Majorelle, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum is a must-visit for fashion enthuousiasts. The museum showcases the designer’s iconic work and his deep connection to Morocco. Marvel at the exquisite couture pieces, sketches, and photographs that highlight Yves Saint Laurent’s revolutionary influence on fashion.
4. Stay and relax in a riad
Staying in a riad is an essential part of the Marrakech experience, offering a serene retreat from the city’s bustling streets. These traditional Moroccan houses, often hidden behind unassuming doors, open into beautiful courtyards adorned with lush plants, intricate tilework, and tranquil fountains. Many riads have been transformed into boutique hotels, providing luxurious accommodations with a touch of authentic Moroccan charm. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the rooftop terrace, unwind with a book in the shaded courtyard, or indulge in a spa treatment. A stay in a riad not only offers comfort and relaxation but also immerses you in the rich cultural heritage of Morocco.
We stayed in Riad Botanica, which we highly recommend! The location is perfect, the riad is beautiful and the swimming pool was the perfect reading spot to relax in the afternoon.
5. Savour Moroccan Cuisine
Treat your taste buds to the rich flavours of Moroccan cuisine. Enroll in a cooking class to learn how to make traditional dishes like tagine, couscous, and pastilla. Visit local eateries and food stalls to sample delicious street food, including savoury pastries, grilled meats, and sweet treats like baklava. We had delicious Moroccan food at Le Tanjia.
6. Experience Jemaa el-Fnaa
This bustling square is the cultural and social hub of Marrakech. By day, it’s filled with vendors selling fresh produce, spices, and souvenirs. As the sun sets, Jemaa el-Fnaa transforms into a lively entertainment area with street performers, musicians, and food stalls. It’s a sensory overload you won’t want to miss.
7. Visit the Bahia Palace
Step back in time at the Bahia Palace, a stunning 19th-century palace that showcases the grandeur of Moroccan architecture. Wander through the ornate rooms, lush gardens, and intricate courtyards. The palace’s beauty and history make it a fascinating place to explore.
9. Relax at a Rooftop Café
Marrakech is famous for its rooftop cafés, where you can relax with a mint tea and enjoy panoramic views of the city. These spots are perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing, catching up with your friends, and watching the sunset over the Medina.
