Santorini, with its breathtaking sunsets, azure waters, and iconic white-washed buildings, is a dream destination for many. However, its popularity can lead to crowded streets and bustling tourist hotspots. Let’s reveal how to experience the magic of Santorini while avoiding the crowds. From exploring hidden gems to discovering off-the-beaten-path experiences, get ready to savour the serenity and create unforgettable memories on this picturesque Greek island.
Visit During the Off-Season
To enjoy Santorini without the peak crowds, consider planning your trip during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) or autumn (September to October). The weather is still pleasant, and you’ll have more space to roam around the island’s enchanting towns and attractions. Plus, you may find better deals on accommodations and flights during these quieter periods.
My boyfriend and I visited Santorini in August, peek season. We were able to avoid the crowds by staying in a less known area, which is as beautiful but less crowded. We stayed in Kamari in Epavlis Grace, a luxury hotel that was quite but with the most beautiful rooms and an amazing view. I highly recommend this hotel. It is located close to the main restaurant en shopping area, and a 5 min walk from the beach. However, it is still quiet and peaceful in the evening.

We also stayed at Nova Santorini Luxury Suites which is a brand new hotel located in Pyrgos. It is a nice place for one or two nights before going back to the airport and to visit Pyrgos, which is one of the lesser known villages but as beautiful! We were almost alone in this hotel and had the pool for ourselves. Relaxation, 100%.

Due to choosing these lesser known locations and brand new hotels, we were able to have a relaxing and peaceful holiday on busy Santorini.
Explore Lesser-Known Villages
While the iconic towns of Oia and Fira are must-visit destinations, Santorini is dotted with lesser-known villages that offer tranquility and authenticity. Take the time to wander through the narrow streets of Pyrgos, perched on a hilltop, or Megalochori, known for its traditional architecture and peaceful ambiance. These hidden gems provide a glimpse into the island’s soul and offer respite from the tourist crowds.

We went for dinner, and of course sunset drinks, in Oia and Fira. We took a taxi to Oia and a bus to Fira from Kamari on two different nights. In this way we did get to experience the busy and popular parts of Santorini without breaking the bank or fighting for sun beds. At the end of the evening, we were happy we could go back to more peaceful parts of the area were we did not have to queue to walk the streets.
Discover Off-the-Beaten-Path Beaches
Santorini is renowned for its stunning beaches, but some are more crowded than others. Escape the masses and seek out hidden coves and less-frequented shores. Red Beach, nestled against dramatic red cliffs, is often quieter early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Alternatively, explore the unique black sand beaches of Perissa or Kamari, where you can relax and soak up the sun in a more serene setting.
Embrace Sunrise and Sunset Magic
Santorini’s sunsets are legendary, but they can attract hordes of spectators. Instead of joining the crowds, opt for the serene beauty of a sunrise. Wake up early and head to the coast or find a peaceful spot on the caldera to witness the island bathed in the soft light of dawn. Alternatively, consider exploring Oia during sunrise, as its narrow streets and panoramic vistas will be much quieter than during sunset.
Take a Boat Trip
Discover Santorini’s wonders from a different perspective by exploring its surrounding islands and the Aegean Sea. Take a boat tour to the volcanic isles of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, where you can hike to the crater and swim in hot springs. Alternatively, hop on a ferry to nearby islands like Thirassia or Schinoussa, where you can immerse yourself in untouched landscapes and enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

Santorini’s allure goes beyond its popular tourist spots. By going off the beaten path, exploring hidden gems, and timing your visit wisely, you can enjoy its serenity and beauty. From discovering lesser-known villages to embracing quieter beaches and seeking alternative perspectives, Santorini can become your own private paradise. So, plan your trip strategically, savour the moments of tranquility, and create memories that truly capture the essence of Santorini’s magic.

Enjoy the beauty of Santorini,
