Yes, finally! Three weeks ago my internship started. I have been looking forward to this for ages. After studying for four and a half years I finally am able to turn all the theory I have put in my head into practical tasks and assignments. Or, that was what I thought would happen.
As a Corporate Communication student I have to do an internship for 30 days in an organization of choice. And as my biggest dream is to work for in an NGO which works with children and/or in education, I looked for that kind of organization to do my internship. And I found one. On a 10-minute walk from the railway station Brussels-South, I found Studio Globo. I was as lucky that they were convinced of my capacities after a job interview. I started working at Studio Globo as an intern on the 30th of January. Studio Globo is an NGO which focuses on education. So it’s the perfect place for me to do my first internship and get some more work experience.
What about Studio Globo? Studio Globo is an NGO for development work and is specialized in development education. Their goals are to open the eyes of children and teenagers and connect them with the outside world. For this they fall back on four principles; exploring the world, learning how to live positively with diversity, getting involved with the environment and helping to build a sustainable and solidary world. With these in mind they offer a wide range of classes, workshops, magazines, etc for kindergarten, primary school, secondary school, university and teachers. Their aim is to support teachers when they teach their students about topics such as diversity, poverty and the environment.

What do I do in this organization as an intern? Well, I help the communication department. This department is manned by two dedicated employees and I am their assistant. I write Facebook posts and essays for the website, I rewrite their flyers and website and I pin. Lucky me, I may pin! As my Pinterest-addiction is real, I happily pin for this organization as well. Overall, I have two major projects, a remake of the flyers of all Studio Globo’s immersion studios and a project around ‘De week van de vrijwilliger’ (the week of the volunteer). The nice thing about this internship is that besides that Studio Globo is a wonderful organization, I may really do something. I don’t have to follow and do little tasks, no. I’m allowed to suggest things, to come up with ideas and to try new things. Next to my work behind the desk, I am also allowed to do some ‘fieldwork’. For example, I had to interview some volunteers for my little project, I had the chance to attend a wonderful immersion studio called ‘India’ (yes, it really looked like I was in India for an afternoon) and next week I will follow a group during a walk in Matonge, a colorful neighborhood in Brussels.

The work that I have to do is varying which is nice and because I have to do so many different things I learn a lot. Although I thought I had gained a lot of knowledge the past four and a half years, there still is a lot to learn when it comes to real life and practice. I am very happy I can do my internship at Studio Globo, because now I can make a difference in a lot of children’s life while still learning and while combining two of my biggest interest; education and communication. Another amazing thing about this organization is that most of their products are culturally-themed and handle about different countries. So when rewriting the flyers in feel like I am in India, Guatemala or Peru. But also other products and themes such as diversity, environment or poverty take me to all kind of different places in Belgium and overseas. I call it exploring the world from behind my desk. Moreover, Wilma can still wander during her lunch breaks and after work. As I do not know Brussels that well, certainly not the area where I am working, I wander around during my lunch breaks and after work. By doing this, I find hidden spots, beautiful places and I come across wonderful people. Lucky me, I am able to do an internship in the heart of Brussels and at such an inspiring organization.

I will keep you updated about my internship and busy life!
Keep on wandering,
L.
